| A Race Map (1.0) - File Description |
 |
Description:
"A Race Map," by AgentSmith_27, is a large snowy map with an interesting concept.
Obviously the author put a not-insubstantial amount of thought into the background of his map's concept, and I have to applaud him for that. Like many maps with an outside-the-box concept, this one needs more than it has to really be effective, and it's clear that the author's imagination is limited by his modding ability (which is not inherently bad - everyone needs to learn, and it's infinitely preferable to having ability limit imagination than the other way around). What this gives us is a map that is different enough from most newbie maps to stand out, but still bears the hallmarks of a new map creator.
The map itself isn't something overly spectacular to look at - it's not bad-looking, but in the effort to create a "functional" map, the author left a few things to be desired, visually (i.e. the large sheer terrain walls, the un-blended terrain, lack of consistent prop use, etc.). While it is a lot harder to make a visually-pleasing map that serves a nonstandard functional purpose (i.e. built for more than a stock game mode), it can be done. Instead of relying on sheer terrain walls, I might suggest simply using some invisible collision (included with the modtools as objects). This'll at the least allow you to have normal-looking cliffs. I'd also suggest using a few more props scattered throughout the course of your "race."
Also, the idea here would be infinitely improved by a little scripting. The biggest downfall of making a map like this assumes that the player is going to buy into the idea 100% - if I load this up and just want to get from point A to point B, I'm going to just jump the cliff wall and drive there. In a video game it's important to have a little bit of hand-holding of the player's character. It's not something that's easy to do, but start out small (I actually started learning scripting to do the exact same thing) and you'll get something that's workable and much better than just an open map.
All in all, it's a fairly basic map. To enjoy it as the author intended, it'd be best to read through the readme. To the author - spend some time working on making your map visually appealing as well as functional, and don't be afraid to branch out into some basic scripting. It'll make maps like this much better for you in the future.

The Story-
It is the middle of the Clone Wars. In one of many battles that rage on throughout the galaxy, the Republic has damaged a CIS capital ship. The ship attempted an escape through a largely uncharted system, but instead crash-landed on an unnamed ice planet. It has been rumored that a technologically advanced race once lived on that planet, and that much of their technology still exists within the ruins of their settlements. The Republic High Command doubts the veracity of these rumors, but the Republic cannot give the CIS even the slightest opportunity to gain any advanced weaponry. The order has been given that all the droids upon the planet must be destroyed immediately. Perhaps this opportunity could be used to discover if there are indeed signs of any advanced technology that could be used during the wars.
Republic mission- The CIS have already entrenched themselves into a small outpost, and hold the superior position. There are two command posts that must be gained if the Republic is to win the day, but the soldiers on foot can't reach them before the CIS do. Your mission is to take a speeder, race through the map, and reach one or both of the command posts (depending on how fast you make it through the course) BEFORE the CIS do. If you can accomplish this, the rest of your men will arrive on foot and the battle should be won easily. If you choose against taking the race course and instead go on foot with your men, the CIS will almost certainly take both cps and the battle will be very difficult to win.
CIS mission- Your mission is easy. March down the long, empty canyon, take both cps, then march down another long canyon and exterminate the Republic. Pretty boring stuff, this map is meant to be played as the Republic.
Multiplayer- Race against your friends through the race course to the "finish" poles by cp 2.

1: Introduction-
This is my first complete map, so of course it's not perfect and I still have some learning to do. Overall, though, I have alot of fun playing it, and hope the rest of you do as well.
2: Installation-
To Install "A Race Map" unzip the Folder this readme is in (A Race Map),(If you have NO programs on your PC to unzip it, I highly recommend 7zip, you can find it via google) copy/cut the folder ARM and paste it into c:Program FilesLucasartsGamedataaddon (Note: If you customized the location when you installed Battlefront 2 it may be different) If the folder addon does not exist, create one. (It IS case sensitive) Then start up Battlefront 2 and A Race Map should appear with the other maps under instant action.
3: Uninstallation-
To Remove A Race Map, Delete the folder ARM from c:Program FilesLucasartsGamedataaddon (Note: If you customized the location when you installed Battlefront 2 it may be different)
4: Mission Notes/Tips-
A few mission notes-
It's easy at the beginning of the map to take a speeder up on top of the mountains and avoid the obstacle course, and it's even easier to take the speeder the same way the rest of the Republic soldiers go. If you do that, the map can be won easily, but then it's no fun at all, is it? This is meant to be a race map. On multiplayer you can race against your friends, and on singleplayer it's a race against the CIS. On singleplayer the "easy" difficulty is to take cp 2 before the CIS reach it, "medium" difficulty is taking cp 3, and "hard" is managing to take both cps before the CIS come around. If you die the first time without managing to grab a cp, it does help save time if you just go around the way the rest of Republic soldiers do on your speeder.
Since the focus is supposed to be on the race section and then the fight to take cp 2 and 3, after one team takes both of those cps and you've gone through the race course the battle can seem a little anticlimactic. To make the ending go a little faster, there's an extra speeder at cp 3 incase the one you're riding gets destroyed (if you want to reach the CIS cp without a whole bunch of extra droids spawning there, just speed past them without killing any and you shouldn't have much trouble).
There is a bit of a secret area that can serve as a short cut (not too hard to find). You have to enter the secret place on foot, however, it won't work with the speeder.
When racing through the map it's easy to fall and lose some health unless you know where to go, so I strongly recommend that you choose the engineer class. Go at whatever speed you're comfortable with, if you go too fast on some of the jumps you can die right away.
5: Credits-
My fellow AgentSmiths: Without you, I wouldn't still be playing bf2, and I certainly wouldn't be attempting modding. They also supplied most of the Inspiration/Ideas for this map

AgentSmith_27 Joined: April 2nd, 2010 Posts: 98 | Thanks for the review Maveritchell, already at first glance I'm slapping myself on the head for the not using the invisible collision objects, as I knew what they were and just didn't think any further of it. You're the one who inspired me to start modding with your awesome Rebel Ops missions, and I'll be sure to try to take what you've said to heart |
Maveritchell (Staff) From: Joined: July 14th, 2007 Posts: 1092 | No problem; I don't know if it'll be any help, but maybe take a look at my earlier Ralltiir map; I did a lot of what you may be trying to do there. My map isn't perfect (in fact it is probably my weakest released map), but some of the suggestions I gave came from working with that map. |

AgentSmith_27 Joined: April 2nd, 2010 Posts: 98 | Cool! I actually vaguely remember having your Ralltiir map before I reformated my PC, once I have a chance I will take a look at it and see what I can assimilate |

CressAlbane From: (Imperial Center) Joined: December 12th, 2009 Posts: 181 | Oh, so this is why the speeders were so important!
Going to have MP servers for it?
(As that seems to be a major part of the map) |
AgentSmith_27 Joined: April 2nd, 2010 Posts: 98 | Yup, I had given up on my map for a few weeks (I didn't know you DON'T place the vehicle in zero editor, and just type it's name in the vehicle spawn) also, I would love to pick a day where I would make a server and play with anyone who has the map. |
CressAlbane From: (Imperial Center) Joined: December 12th, 2009 Posts: 181 | DLing now, (sorry) I might delete the map after playing online for a couple weeks. |
AgentSmith_27 Joined: April 2nd, 2010 Posts: 98 | Don't apologize, I really appreciate you trying it out, and if it weren't my map I'd most probably delete it if I didn't have my friends to race against (which is why I made this map) |
