| Geonosis: Landing at Point Rain (1.0) - File Description |
 |
Description:
When I see the title "Geonosis: Landing at Point Rain" - or any title like it, specifically, of the "including-the-word-Geonosis" sort - I go into a map with certain expectations. This is the point at which I will harp on the glut of Geonosis maps, etc. etc. For sake of brevity, let's just pretend that I did.
In any case, "Geonosis: Landing at Point Rain" by Darth_Spiderpig is a Geonosis map themed after - and get this - not Episode II, but the battle seen in the Clone Wars cartoon series. It was a tight little arc in the show and fun to watch, and I can see why it would inspire a revisit to Geonosis in the game.
For the part of making the map feel more like Clone Wars Geonosis and less like Episode II Geonosis, I think the author did a good job. Through liberal use of community-made models, the sides at the least feel and look a "good" different. The map itself is nice too - it's got all the Geonosis hallmarks, but it does mix it up with some custom models, some retouching to the stock models, and some nice lighting. Having the skydome flyers/animated props did a nice job too in setting the stage for the map. I think the author successfully avoided most of the things that make me groan about Geonosis maps specifically.
However - there are several problems that are not-Geonosis-related. The biggest one is that there's a lot that feels incomplete or not-bugchecked, which is strange given the polish seen on some other aspects of the map. There are lots of missing localizations, both in weapons and in units (there are only a couple CIS units that actually have localization). There are also at least a few missing or floating weapons icons. And while I applaud the attempt to make the units consistent in theme across both sides, I think it would have been a better choice to use stock droid models than the custom droid model that is used here, because it has a pretty obvious enveloping error on the knee. Additionally, the Republic's jet trooper unit flew as though it had a jetpack, but there was no jetpack model.
Another big issue is the set of object placement issues. Just in a cursory playthrough - which is all I ever really give submitted maps, not the kind of in-depth playthrough that should take place in testing them - I noticed more than a handful of these errors. There are lots in the tunnels in the back of the map, and there is even one incredibly obvious one with one of the CIS's CPs. Near that same CP (as well as other places), I also noticed a few pathing issues. Pathing can be tough to get just right, but on a wide open map like this, there should much fewer issues than normal.
And then there is the balance. It's patently apparent with the majority of maps with custom Clone Wars sides that the authors invest much more time into the Republic side ("Because who plays the CIS, right? Right?"), and one of the ways it is usually evidenced is in the mismatch of sides. Here too, it feels like it's much easier to win as the Republic. The CIS's only advantage appears to be a 50-unit difference in reinforcements (which is less of a big deal since the reinforcements are 650/600). The Republic has better flyers, a better defensive position, better apparent units (Like an infinite flamethrower trooper with regenerating health? A hero whose attacks don't deplete any energy or have any delay?). All in all, it was much easier to force a conquest victory (versus a reinforcement victory) with the Republic than the CIS.
I also found it very off-putting to hear Pirates of the Caribbean music in the game. Didn't quite fit the theme, there.
All in all, I can appreciate the amount of work that went into this, and I appreciate the use of a different approach to the old standby, Geonosis. However, I'd like to see a little more care done in terms of testing to make sure a map like this with potential doesn't feel as incompletely polished as it does. It's still worth a look - see the screenshots below, and give it a try.

*****************************************************************
1) Introduction
After almost 2 years of waiting and improving and crashing, long anticipated Geonosis is
finally out. One thing I would like to say is that the map isn't a direct copy of what
you can see in the The Clone Wars episode "Landing at Point Rain", more a interpretation
of what I saw and liked. It features manymany custom models, and since most of them were
made by me, they are not perfect.
2) Installation
After you downloaded this file, simply double click it and install.
To uninstall Geonosis:Landing at Point Rain just delete the folder LPR from
c:Program FilesLucasartsGamedataaddon
3) Story
My map plays right after Waxer and Boil rescued Obi Wan out of the crashed Gunship and
medically treated him in the defense area they set up. Now the CIS and the geonosians are
attacking and Obi Wan has to fight even though he is already injured. Can the Republic
defend or even push the CIS back and destroy the shield generator so that the Strike Force
can destroy the Droid Factory?
4) Little tips
First off, I made the weapons stronger, so rushing into the battle Rambo-style will get
you killed in seconds. I would advice seeking cover and then take out the biggest enemies
in sight. As Cis the closer you get to the Circle, the more likely it is to be shot. The AT-TEs
are manable turrets, and they will shoot you, so be careful or move fast (Droideka) or take them
out from behind your shield.
