| Geonosis: Landing at Point Rain (1.0) - File Description |
 |
Description:
When I see the title "Geonosis: Landing at Point Rain" - or any title like it, specifically, of the "including-the-word-Geonosis" sort - I go into a map with certain expectations. This is the point at which I will harp on the glut of Geonosis maps, etc. etc. For sake of brevity, let's just pretend that I did.
In any case, "Geonosis: Landing at Point Rain" by Darth_Spiderpig is a Geonosis map themed after - and get this - not Episode II, but the battle seen in the Clone Wars cartoon series. It was a tight little arc in the show and fun to watch, and I can see why it would inspire a revisit to Geonosis in the game.
For the part of making the map feel more like Clone Wars Geonosis and less like Episode II Geonosis, I think the author did a good job. Through liberal use of community-made models, the sides at the least feel and look a "good" different. The map itself is nice too - it's got all the Geonosis hallmarks, but it does mix it up with some custom models, some retouching to the stock models, and some nice lighting. Having the skydome flyers/animated props did a nice job too in setting the stage for the map. I think the author successfully avoided most of the things that make me groan about Geonosis maps specifically.
However - there are several problems that are not-Geonosis-related. The biggest one is that there's a lot that feels incomplete or not-bugchecked, which is strange given the polish seen on some other aspects of the map. There are lots of missing localizations, both in weapons and in units (there are only a couple CIS units that actually have localization). There are also at least a few missing or floating weapons icons. And while I applaud the attempt to make the units consistent in theme across both sides, I think it would have been a better choice to use stock droid models than the custom droid model that is used here, because it has a pretty obvious enveloping error on the knee. Additionally, the Republic's jet trooper unit flew as though it had a jetpack, but there was no jetpack model.
Another big issue is the set of object placement issues. Just in a cursory playthrough - which is all I ever really give submitted maps, not the kind of in-depth playthrough that should take place in testing them - I noticed more than a handful of these errors. There are lots in the tunnels in the back of the map, and there is even one incredibly obvious one with one of the CIS's CPs. Near that same CP (as well as other places), I also noticed a few pathing issues. Pathing can be tough to get just right, but on a wide open map like this, there should much fewer issues than normal.
And then there is the balance. It's patently apparent with the majority of maps with custom Clone Wars sides that the authors invest much more time into the Republic side ("Because who plays the CIS, right? Right?"), and one of the ways it is usually evidenced is in the mismatch of sides. Here too, it feels like it's much easier to win as the Republic. The CIS's only advantage appears to be a 50-unit difference in reinforcements (which is less of a big deal since the reinforcements are 650/600). The Republic has better flyers, a better defensive position, better apparent units (Like an infinite flamethrower trooper with regenerating health? A hero whose attacks don't deplete any energy or have any delay?). All in all, it was much easier to force a conquest victory (versus a reinforcement victory) with the Republic than the CIS.
I also found it very off-putting to hear Pirates of the Caribbean music in the game. Didn't quite fit the theme, there.
All in all, I can appreciate the amount of work that went into this, and I appreciate the use of a different approach to the old standby, Geonosis. However, I'd like to see a little more care done in terms of testing to make sure a map like this with potential doesn't feel as incompletely polished as it does. It's still worth a look - see the screenshots below, and give it a try.
-Mav

-----------------------------Geonosis: Landing at Point Rain-----------------------------
*****************************************************************
1) Introduction
After almost 2 years of waiting and improving and crashing, long anticipated Geonosis is
finally out. One thing I would like to say is that the map isn't a direct copy of what
you can see in the The Clone Wars episode "Landing at Point Rain", more a interpretation
of what I saw and liked. It features manymany custom models, and since most of them were
made by me, they are not perfect.
2) Installation
After you downloaded this file, simply double click it and install.
To uninstall Geonosis:Landing at Point Rain just delete the folder LPR from
c:Program FilesLucasartsGamedataaddon
3) Story
My map plays right after Waxer and Boil rescued Obi Wan out of the crashed Gunship and
medically treated him in the defense area they set up. Now the CIS and the geonosians are
attacking and Obi Wan has to fight even though he is already injured. Can the Republic
defend or even push the CIS back and destroy the shield generator so that the Strike Force
can destroy the Droid Factory?
4) Little tips
First off, I made the weapons stronger, so rushing into the battle Rambo-style will get
you killed in seconds. I would advice seeking cover and then take out the biggest enemies
in sight. As Cis the closer you get to the Circle, the more likely it is to be shot. The AT-TEs
are manable turrets, and they will shoot you, so be careful or move fast (Droideka) or take them
out from behind your shield.

THEWULFMAN From: (OHIO) Joined: September 4th, 2010 Posts: 38 | This is the first time I have every disagreed with Mav about maps and mods, that may be due to the fact that Spiderpig and I are friends, but still.
First, about the music, to say you were put-off by the Pirates of the Caribbean music in the game is really not accurate. Only obiwan has any Pirates of the Caribbean music in the whole map. The rest is sourced mainly from, get this, The Clone Wars movie, along with a couple of other sources like X-Men. Only 1 piece of Pirates of the Caribbean, and thats hero music..
Now, when it comes to things like the localization, floating weapon icons, stuff like that, while I agree, they are minimal.
I do think I need to talk to him about how to do better sides, My TCW mod is not quite the same, the CIS has two advantages, a 100 reinforcement point advantage, and a 2 to 1 unit count, 25 to 50. Its a real toss up actually.
All in all, 9.7/10 on the map, not going to say anything about the sides. |
THEWULFMAN From: (OHIO) Joined: September 4th, 2010 Posts: 38 | Not a big deal, but I also made Cody's skin |
Maveritchell (Staff) From: Joined: July 14th, 2007 Posts: 1092 | Really not accurate? Is it not true then? Is there not Pirates of the Caribbean music in there?
My whole point was the fact that everything else - even the rest of the music - is Star Wars themed with the exception of the completely-out-of-the-blue Pirates of the Caribbean music.
And I'm not saying that you can't enjoy the map for what it is, I'm just saying that there were a sizable amount of noticeable issues that went unnoticed or uncorrected during testing. I mention them so that authors can learn what mistakes not to make in the future. |
JasonBall From: (The Land of Jerks) Joined: April 23rd, 2010 Posts: 924 | PotC music! awesome! *looks at what site i'm on* ok, I agree with mav on this one.
i do like POTC, though. it's cool. as for the map, it looks cool-lish. That episode was great, (I can't wait to see what median thinks of this map being based off of TCW) but we all know the republic wins every time. (with the exception of season 2 premiere on felucia)
two years? really? the episode was about just over ONE year(s) ago. but, it looks ok. |
THEWULFMAN From: (OHIO) Joined: September 4th, 2010 Posts: 38 | I understand that Mav, but I was pointing out that you may it sound like there was nothing but POTC music. When there is alot of other music, its shortselling it. Plus, its all my custom music that I gave him thats why I defend it
I played through the map several times, I have to say, there is NO WAY this is the final version, what I mean by that is there are several things missing, like my new weapon model. I will talk to Spiderpig about fixing these probs and releaseing a 1.1 |
Median_Starkli From: (Hiigara) Joined: July 1st, 2009 Posts: 1297 | Wow. I have fans!
And, I think I'm the only person that plays CIS here, right? Why bother? Anyways, clone may have the advantage on many things on this map, but I have the ultimate power of BFII that will wipe 'em out! With this power, I am unstoppable! And that power is *wait for it* the Legendary Fake Console! MUHUAHAHAHAHAHA!!!
That aside, I hate the series, and I bet clones win (again). Despite that, it looks intersting, so, I'm gonna make DL, and change history forever. |

Jendo07 From: (Cambridge) Joined: May 8th, 2009 Posts: 433 | Great map, it really gave me a feeling of the TCW series. It was quite different from stock SWBFII. |
Darth_Spiderpig From: (Salzburg) Joined: January 15th, 2009 Posts: 104 | I suggest downloading 7zip if you haven't got it, it's the best in making the file as small in size as possible. |

Darth_Spiderpig From: (Salzburg) Joined: January 15th, 2009 Posts: 104 | If you would be more exact in how far and what you don't like, I can work on it.
Just from "it could have been better" I can't do much to improve it. |
RevanJOM Joined: July 26th, 2007 Posts: 302 | Sweet map. I was totally waiting for this to come out. And now that it has, I'll have to download and play it today. I absolutely loved that TCW episode and to finally be able to participate as a trooper in a map that recreates the same one from the show is just awesome. |
Darth_Spiderpig From: (Salzburg) Joined: January 15th, 2009 Posts: 104 | Thanks, I hope you'll enjoy it. |
Nabopolasszar From: (Békéscsaba) Joined: March 2nd, 2009 Posts: 27 | OK if I want to change Waxer's (or Boil's i dont remeber) the game crashes,
-if I destroy the shield generator the cannons are neot blowing up with that, instead they're foating,
-the legs of the B1 need to fix(yeah I kow Madarek made them, but you could use the stock ones)
-if I change the primary weapon of the secont clone unit I can't chage it back to the rifle
-the DC-15A should been much more powerful than the DC-15S
amd the pities: Cody didnt have jetpack at that time, IMO the map is too small to starfighters, the "giant wall is missing", from the right of the landing point there is a cave entrance where you can fall through, you shoul add more weapons to the first clone unit
If I found other I promise Im going to write |
Nabopolasszar From: (Békéscsaba) Joined: March 2nd, 2009 Posts: 27 | Spiderpig, if i were you i would make 3 separate campaigna missions:
The first would be with the 501-you start from an crashed laat, (at the beggining you can choose between Skywalker or Ahsoka), and your mission would be to get to the landing zone-through massive bugs and the barrier and after you cleared the landing zone you should take out the cannons at the shield generator.
The second would be with the 212, here you start from a Venator and the firs mission would be to land. Then you need to change to Waxer or to Boil and rescoue Kenobi(i would do that as a flag) then to hold i dont know 5 mins?
The third would be with jet troops. The main objective here would be to get past the cave then clear the LZ and after "hp" into one of the at-te get to the proper position and take out the guns and the shiel generator
I know it's easy to tell and hard to make, but if you could make it you would be the best SBFII modder in the world |
