| Snowball Fight (Beta) - File Description |
 |
Description:
This map, by Ty294, is what I assume is a work-in-progress of a winter-themed mod.
It's pretty much what you would expect. Troopers armed with only grenades with no splash damage (we'll call them "snowballs") run around a snowy field in a TDM-type setup. As a work-in-progress, it's reasonably well-done for being in an early state, but there are things that should be addressed as the author moves on.
The first thing is the music - I like it, but right now it seems to be using sound stream regions. This isn't really what sound stream regions are supposed to be used for, and it creates a strange cutting-in-and-out effect when you run around the map. What you probably should want to do is use ambient sound streams, which are designed to run streaming music behind the map.
There are also AI pathing issues, in that there's probably no planning set up for the AI at all. That's not terrible if this is only to be a test map, but if this is supposed to be the map the mod is eventually finished on, then mix it up a little - right now, the AI run to the enemy CP and stay there.
Another thing is the fact that the AI don't ever use their weapons. This is a simple .odf tweak; make sure that this mod is actually playable in single player!
The author has some neat ideas, I am sure, and what with it being winter and all, I'd love to see this kind of thing be expanded upon. Take a look at some of the pertinent tutorials relating to the issues above, and really flesh this thing out!

It's set up to run just how the music on any shipped map is set up... My guess is you never got beyond the "start" music, which only goes a short time before fading out. I'd suggest killing a few of your own guys to activate the "middle" music.
I actually do have planning paths, but the dumb-AI just run to the CPs and stay there. I used to have the CP's capturable, but that just resulted in four contested CPs with units of both sides hanging around not killing each other, and thus the CPs were never captured.
The main problem is the weapon, but unfortunately, I really have no idea what the problem is. BF2 units are less grenade happy than BF1 units, sure, plus the grenades in BF2 are "off-hand" weapons rather than primary weapons. I'm not sure if it's something to do with the weapon lock-on range or what that is making the AI not attack. I had a similar problem with my BF1 version, but even at its worst they still attacked more than here.
Yah, unfortunately, all the problems center around those dumb AI... |
Maveritchell (Staff) From: Joined: July 14th, 2007 Posts: 1068 | Hey now, don't blame the AI, that's poor form. They'll do pretty much what you tell them to do. You'll want to set proper AI goals (i.e. deathmatch goals instead of conquest goals), set up a proper deathmatch mode (instead of using a conquest mode), and, like I said, tell AI to use their grenades on units (by default AI only uses grenades on vehicles).
And if you did use ambient streams, then they're very odd. Each segment (start, middle, and end) should be a full looping track, and the game will auto-fade one segment to another when appropriate. In a deathmatch-style map, you should really only be using the "start" stream (see the Mos Eisley deathmatch script for reference).
Don't be afraid to ask questions, but please don't just blame your "problems" on something else. |

BF2 certainly has more to learn... |

Jaspo From: (Minnesota) Joined: October 30th, 2008 Posts: 371 | to install maps, you put the whole folder in the addon folder...unless the whole folder is in another whole folder...what should be in the addon folder is the folder that is labeled with three capitalized letters (and of course everything inside it). As for the 1.3 patch, it has an installer, just run that and that should be it, so long as the game wasn't installed in a custom location (somewhere other than c:/program files/lucasarts/starwarsbattlefront2 or whatever it is). |

This is for comments on the mod/map. I understand how it is to be just starting out, but from now on ask your questions at on of those places. Thank you. |
