| Tatooine: Outpost (1.0) - File Description |
 |
Description:
"Tatooine: Outpost," by Jendo07, is another map along the lines of his "like-the-stock-maps-but-not-really" theme. As per the title, the map is set on Tatooine, and that should set the stage pretty well for what one can expect to see here.
This map seems to be pretty representative of the Dune Sea on Tatooine - probably moreso than the actual Dune Sea map (of which the author did a redux), which was always more like the Jundland Wastes. This map has a lot of flowing dunes with some scattered areas of settlements or huts.
There are a lot of different modes to play - one thing I always like about this author's releases is that there is always a breadth of content - it makes it easy to play the map in a way that you like. You can play in conquest, 2-flag, and hero assault, along with one particularly interesting hunt mode.
While the map does a good job setting the scene as it should be, one thing that immediately stood out to me was how flat everything looked. No, I don't mean to say that the terrain appeared to be graded flat (it is actually quite hilly) - I mean that it, texturewise and lightingwise, looked pretty plain. And yes - deserts are like that. However, I think that because this was all done with terrain and because there was very little variation in the terrain texture or color, it didn't look quite real. I think that in this particular case, modeled terrain pieces might have worked well (because they would have picked up light better), or perhaps having some light, light color brushed on with the paint tool in ZE might have helped.
The map was also really open. Again, desert, I know. However, in terms of playing the game, I think it might have worked well to include either a few more command posts (to break up the running around) or making the modes focused on specific areas of the map (similar to how hunt mode is in only one area). XL mode works well here, because at least the map feels like there's enough going on to justify the expanse better.
A couple things that I really liked were the aforementioned hunt mode and the area around which it was centered. The hunt mode is a mode that pits Anakin against a bunch of Tusken Raiders, and yes, you will kill them all, even the women and children. In fact, there is so much one-sided slaughter that it really seems unnecessary to have it available to play as the Tusken Raiders - it's a very slow game playing on that side, and given the power of the Anakin unit, only three points per kill seems a little low. That aside, it is a lot of fun (and the mood is well set) to have the reinterpreted Episode II scene available to play in.
The area there too is nice - in fact, I think it is the highlight of the map, which I know sounds strange. It's just a bunch of rocks, but it's put together really well and it looks nice - it stands out much more than the coarse, rough sandy areas that get everywhere else.
In any case, this is another well-polished map representative of a well-established location. Give it a try.
