| Trulalis (1.0) - File Description |
 |
Tech: 6 Quality: 5 FunFactor: 6 Creativity: 6 Item Placement: 4
Overall Rating: 5.4 | Description:
"Trulalis," by Deadbolt216, is a medium-large Naboo-esque city set on a fairly generic planet. The map seems to be as much about showcasing the sides it comes with as the map itself.
The map itself is (as mentioned above) very much like Naboo; it uses mostly un-re-textured Naboo (Theed) assets. I like the map design (raised city with changing elevations), but there are a lot of things that need fixing. Many props have poor collision (unfortunately, many Naboo assets do - this is something the modder must fix himself when he uses those props). I noticed quite a few models floating off the ground, which is something that really needs to be fixed - seeing "behind" or under a model looks pretty tacky. There were also one or two different models missing some of their textures. Finally, while it can be ok to use "sharper" terrain in a city, it needs to be covered up well when it slopes - there were several areas that could have used buildings (or something) to cover up the sharp terrain changes.
The sides were a different matter. The CW sides are "pirates" versus "mercenaries," and this is pretty much an "overpowered" weapons mode (which is too bad, I played this second and was hoping to see something a little more like the other sides). It is fairly standard as overpowered weapons go (beams that do lots of damage, etc.), but I did notice a couple weapons were missing sounds - maybe something to look into and fix. The GCW sides were, in my opinion, much better - they represented an Alliance vs. Mandalorians battle. The weapons here were more playable (although still stronger than normal), and it seemed like the author did a good job of presenting a consistent idea with his sides. The GCW sides did seem a little unbalanced, though, as it was much, much easier to win on the Alliance team than the Mandalorians.
In any case, it's a decent map, but I think the best part is the GCW sides. The map shows promise, design-wise, but it needs work.

This isn't my first map, but it is the first map I'm confident enough in to release.
Clone Wars Era: Pirates vs. Mercenaries. Started off as just an experimental side, but turned out to be way more fun than leaving a boring stock side.
Galactic Civil War Era: Mandalorians vs. Galactic Alliance. Why? Because I can.
Installation Instructions: Place the folder "TRL" in Star Wars Battlefront II/Game Data/addon. If there is no addon folder, create one. Now.
Small to mid-sized urban map set along a coastline (or what should be a coast; the water continually caused a crash, so after several failed attempts to fix it, I simply removed it). It utilizes Naboo assets, unmodified for the most part. I planned on changing the building textures until I realized that the stock texture was the look I wanted. However, the map's custom sides are totally revamped to the point where about the only stock thing is the sound. The GCW era is the main one. I only included CW because the sides turned out to be a lot of fun to play with. Keep in mind that I modified weapons to be more realistic, and as such, they shoot faster, straighter, and harder, and consequently the player's life is much shorter. Weapons for all sides are almost the same; an American M4, Russian AK47, and German G36 all shoot the same 5.56mm ammunition, so it seems logical that a Mandalorian carbine would shoot the same rounds as an Alliance carbine. More information on changes can be found in the tips during loading. All known issues are listed in the readme, as are the credits for models, textures, and tutorials.
Future Fixes: I don't know yet. Ask me in the future.
Bugs/Issues:
--The Tusken Sharpshooter's controls are mixed up. Right-click blocks when the melee weapon is equipped and the reload button fires the secondary attack. Sorry for the complication, but it's not worth the effort of changing the combo file.
--An outline of the jetpack on some Mandalorian models remains, but only in the unit selection screen. In game, it's completely gone.
--No water along the northern shore. I worked on it for hours and researched a dozen threads on Gametoast, but I couldn't get it to work for some reason.
--Despite my constant efforts to re-path, units still occasionally get stuck. It's a fairly rare occurance though, and even then AI will eventually work around obstacles.
--A few (very few--only 3 objects come to mind) objects aren't completely grounded. It was either this or have objects interfere with gameplay, so I chose function over fashion.

Just be patient, and like it says, wait a bit. I don't know why it's not up immediately (as they usually are), but if the message says to wait, then please do so. |

Deadbolt216 Joined: August 10th, 2009 Posts: 3 | Thanks for the comments. I wasn't even planning on including the Clone Wars era sides at all, but I enjoyed playing with them and simply left them in for fun. The texture collision Mav mentioned was perhaps the most frustrating issue I encountered, and if anyone knows a way to either fix or bypass this I would be much obliged. |
Corr From: Joined: July 28th, 2008 Posts: 553 | The bots kept falling "under" the stairwell in the... I'll just call it the "Town Square," the center area of the map. You could escape if you had a jetpack though.
But yeah, other than that and what Mav mentioned, this is definitely worth the download. 9/10 |
