The best four maps you've never played - Miscellaneous

I have a confession to make. Despite the fact that I love spending time creating mods or maps, I rarely take the time to sit down and play them (especially if they are not my own). However, every once in a while, I will pull out a few of my old favorites (or re-download them) and just enjoy taking a trip down memory lane.

I was playing through a few old favorites just the other day when the thought crossed my mind, "A lot of people haven't even heard of these maps, just because they were never uploaded to a lot of places." For some of these, this is a real shame, because there are some really fantastic pieces of work out there.

In the spirit of helping you to enjoy these works and giving some much-deserved recognition to the creators of these works, I'm going to spend some time writing about them, in the hopes that you - the reader - will take some time, find the download links to these, and enjoy them as I have. I won't post any links here, because it's not my place to choose where and when people have their files hosted, but I will encourage you to - if you are intrigued by the descriptions and pictures - do some searching and find them.

So here they are: the best four maps you've never played (because they're not hosted here), in no particular order. Enjoy!

The first of the four is Delinquent's Pestox: Urban Wasteland. This map (like Delinquent's other maps which are hosted here, like Imperial Base or Raxus Prime) is a great example of how to use stock assets well. As Star Wars Battlefront II has gotten older and the modding community has matured, a lot more knowledge and custom assets have become available, and as a result, a lot of newer maps will look a bit more creative. However, all of Delinquent's maps, this one most notably, are exceptions to that rule. What you'll see in this beautifully-constructed map is use of assets from several different maps (not just all-Tatooine or all-Bespin), liberal retexturing, and lots of atmospheric effects. All of these (combined with some creative sides) help this map to really stand out as a truly unique creation.

In the following screenshots, you can see the use of all of the above to create a haunting urban atmosphere unrivaled by the vast majority of maps (see the bottom of the article for all the pictures in a larger size):

While you are probably familiar with Rends's popular Coruscant maps, the second of the four maps, Mos Eisley: Spaceport (beta) is - in my opinion - superior to either one of them, and unfortunately not as well-known. Unlike Pestox above, this version of Mos Eisley stands out probably because of its use of stock assets exactly as they were intended, with a very liberal use of custom (and well-coordinated) assets as well. Put simply, Mos Eisley: Spaceport is easily one of the most detailed maps (and for its size, easily the most detailed) there is available. When Rends made this, his goal was to accurately reproduce the city as seen in Episode IV and, while I can't speak for the original set designers, it looks pretty darn good to me.

From cantinas, to droids roaming the streets, to landspeeders, to junkyards - even down to Docking Bay 94, Mos Eisley: Spaceport is a pitch-perfect recreation, and these screenshots hardly begin to do it justice:

The third map, Pinioncorp's Muunilinst: Rooftops (beta) is a triumph of colorful custom assets. Everything in the map (or at least nearly so) is newly-modeled specifically to recreate the banker's city on Muunilinst. All are done in bright and refreshing hues - which is nice to see, a city that doesn't try and look dark and war-torn. The detail is very nice - the map works so well as a conquest map, you almost forget to take the time (and believe me, you will want to) to notice what's going on in the scenery. If you don't look carefully, you may miss custom star destroyers in the sky, or a subway-train that'll move you from one side of the map to another, or a large banking vault with gold scattered on the floor - these are just some of the unique visuals in the map.

Seeing a completely-custom map is always a joy, because it guarantees something new and fresh. Take a look at these pictures, and get a small window onto the rooftops of Muunilinst:

The fourth and final map is archer01's Operation Ferret Master, which despite its title has nothing to do with ferrets (the implication is that the Master in question is ferreted out). This map, despite its simplicity in visual design, is a triumph as a standard-setter for what can be done in Battlefront in terms of campaigns or scripted RPGs. I've made, myself, a number of "story-mode" maps, but it was testing this map of archer01's out that made me want to do the same for myself. To this day, this is one of my absolute favorite maps out there, and if you take the time to play through its story mode, you'll have a real blast - it's a fun story with a very decent length.

Don't let the appearance fool you - this map was groundbreaking and is lots of fun to play:

So there you have it - the maps that are, in my opinion, the four best maps you've never played. If you have had the opportunity to play them before, super - hopefully, though, you'll see something in here that you've never played, and now you'll get the chance to.

And this of course is not to mitigate the number of great maps we do have available at the site - if I were to go through and try and list every map I thought was a real "A+," it would take quite a while. So when you're looking for maps, don't just stop at the "Twenty most recently uploaded" or the first couple pages in the map archive. Take some time, browse through - there are lots of gems out there waiting for you to play them.

-Mav
